Gibson has just introduced the 50th anniversary version of the legendary 1960 ES-335TD. Back in the 1950s Gibson introduced a number of very innovative new guitar models like the ES-335, the Flying V and the Explorer. Maybe a little too innovative at the time and by 1960 they stopped making both the Flying V and the Explorer. The ES-335 though became a huge succes and were played by anybody from rock players to jazz players and i now considered one of the absolute Gibson classic.
The reason for the name ES-335 is that it is a hollowbody guitar that they electrified so ES stands for Electric Spanish and the 335 is because the guitar at the time was sold for 335$. Well that’s a way to name a guitar.
In 1960 Gibson introduced the ES-335TD which was build to the same specs as the 50’s model but with a thinner ad more elliptical neck. It kept the dot fingerboard inlays, the double cutaway profile, the full-length maple centerblock, and the nickel-plated hardware.
The 50s anniversary 1960 ES-335TD model is build by the Gibson Custom division in Memphis who have tried to make a reincarnation of the legendary guitar. Custom is build with the same “fast neck profile” as the 1960 version but with a holly head veneer and tortoise shell side dot material. It is available in Antique Vintage Sunburst, Antique Faded Cherry or Antique Natural finish, all aged in Gibson’s acclaimed VOS (Vintage Original Specs) process, and loaded with period-correct hardware including “insert” volume and tone knobs, double band tuners and a pair of accurate PAF-style 57 Classic humbucking pickups.
So if you like the anniversary models of the old Gibson classics then this could be for you and if have allready tried it please give us a comment on what you think about it.
